At many music schools, the process works like this:
- The school asks about your goals and musical preferences.
- An instructor is assigned based on the genre you want to learn.
However, not every music school has a music production instructor with genuine jazz expertise.
When I worked as an instructor at a music school, I was once asked:
“We don’t currently have a specialist. Would you be able to teach classical music?”
I declined because I felt it would be unfair to teach something outside my area of expertise when students were paying a substantial lesson fee.
However, some schools take the following approach:
“We would like you to teach it while learning the genre yourself.”
In this situation, students may lose the opportunity to learn directly from a genuine specialist.
That is a significant missed opportunity.
What to Look for in Jazz Music Production Lessons
If you seriously want to learn how to produce jazz with a DAW, I recommend checking the following points:
- Does the instructor actually produce jazz music?
- Do they present jazz as one of their main areas of expertise?
Simply being able to explain jazz theory is not enough.
Unless the instructor actively produces jazz, it can be difficult for them to teach the subtle nuances and practical decisions involved in arranging the music.
During a trial lesson, do not hesitate to ask:
- What kind of jazz music have you produced?
- Which genres do you usually work in?
Music lessons are a significant investment.
